How to Store Your Dog Treats Like a Pro (Because Mouldy Treats Are Not the Vibe)

You’ve just stocked up on all your dog’s Laila & Me faves…freeze-dried venison, roo jerky, duck heads, maybe even a rogue croc foot for the overachiever snackers. Your pup’s living the dream… until a few weeks later you open a bag and bam: it smells funky. And not the cool, retro kind of funky. The “even-the-dog-won’t-touch-it” kind.

So, how do you keep those premium, single-ingredient dog treats fresh and fabulous for longer? Don’t stress,  we’ve got you (and your pantry) covered.

    1. Seal. The. Bag.

Air and moisture are the sworn enemies of your dog’s favourite treats. Always press that reseal strip tight after use. If it’s not sealing properly (or if you’ve cut it wonky opening the bag, we’ve all been there), transfer the treats into an airtight container or ziplock bag. Bonus points if it matches your Pinterest-worthy pantry aesthetic.

    2. Freeze-Dried ≠ Forever-Dried

Just because your Chicken Hearts and Salmon Bellies are shelf-stable doesn’t mean they’re indestructible. They’re real food, not neon-coloured pellets pretending to be.

Keep them cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Heat and humidity are a fast track to condensation inside the bag, and you know what comes next: mouldy regrets.

    3. Live Somewhere Hot? Fridge It.

If you’re in a warm or humid area (hi Queensland 👋), consider keeping oilier treats like duck heads or salmon bellies in the fridge. Just make sure they’re sealed tight so they don’t come out smelling like last night’s takeaway.

    4. Rotate Your Stash Like a Pro

If you’re living your best “treat variety” life and have multiple bags open, use the oldest ones first. FIFO (first in, first out) isn’t just for cafes and warehouses, it’s how you avoid a dog snack time surprise that smells like 2023.

    The Bottom Line

A little storage savvy goes a long way. Seal it, store it right, and rotate your stash to keep your dog’s treats fresh and safe. Because nothing kills snack time faster than a whiff of “gone bad.”
